The Ancient Craft of Bow Carving: A Complete Guide to Making Your Own Traditional Bow

There is something deeply satisfying about holding a bow you carved with your own hands. The weight of the wood, the tension of the string, the quiet pride that comes from knowing you built a tool that humans have relied upon for tens of thousands of years — it connects you to something ancient and real. Bow carving, sometimes called bow making or stickbow crafting, is a skill that has seen a remarkable revival in recent years, drawing in woodworkers, archers, primitive skills enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the intersection of art and function.

Whether you are completely new to the craft or you have tried your hand at it before and want to refine your approach, this guide will walk you through every meaningful stage of the process, from selecting the right wood to shooting your first arrow off a bow you made yourself.


Why Carve Your Own Bow?

Before we get into the practical details, it is worth pausing on the question of why. After all, you can buy a perfectly functional recurve or compound bow at any archery shop. What makes the carved bow worth the time and effort?

The answer is different for everyone. For some people, it is about self-sufficiency — the knowledge that if you had to, you could make a working hunting tool from materials found in nature. For others, it is a meditation, a way of slowing down in a world that moves too fast. Bow carving demands patience. You cannot rush it. The wood tells you what it wants to be, and your job is to listen.

For many carvers, the appeal is also deeply aesthetic. A well-made longbow is a beautiful object. The graceful curve of the limbs, the subtle grain of the wood, the smooth pull of a good draw — these things have a quality that no factory-made product can quite replicate.

And then there is the community. Traditional archery and primitive skills circles are full of generous, knowledgeable people who are genuinely excited to share what they know. Picking up this craft puts you in conversation with centuries of human ingenuity and with a living community that is actively keeping that ingenuity alive.


Understanding the Basics: How a Bow Works

To carve a bow well, you need to understand the physics behind it, at least in a practical sense. A bow stores energy when you draw the string back and releases that energy into the arrow when you let go. The limbs — the upper and lower arms of the bow — do the work. They bend under tension and spring back, driving the string forward.

Every bow has two surfaces. The belly is the side of the bow that faces you when you shoot — the side that faces the string. The back is the side facing away from you, toward the target. When you draw the bow, the belly is compressed and the back is stretched. Understanding this distinction is critical, because the wood on each surface is doing very different work.

The handle section of the bow is called the grip or riser. It connects the two limbs and is where you hold the bow. In a simple self bow — a bow made from a single piece of wood — the riser is just a thicker section in the middle of the stave.

The brace height is the distance between the string and the grip when the bow is strung but not drawn. Getting the brace height right affects how the bow shoots and how it stresses the wood.


Choosing Your Wood

Wood selection is one of the most important decisions you will make in this process, and it is worth taking your time with it.

Different woods have different properties, and the ideal wood for a bow is one that handles both compression and tension well. Osage orange, also called hedge apple or Bois d’arc, is widely regarded as the finest bow wood in North America. It is dense, springy, and rot-resistant, and it produces fast, powerful bows. If you can source a good Osage orange stave, you are starting with an excellent material.

Black locust is another outstanding choice, sharing many of Osage orange’s best qualities. It is slightly more forgiving for beginners and easier to find in many parts of the country. Yew was the traditional choice for English longbows, and it remains a favorite among traditional bowyers today, though it requires more skill to work because it has very different properties on the heartwood and sapwood sides.

For beginners, red oak is the most commonly recommended starting material. It is inexpensive, widely available, easy to work, and forgiving enough to give you room to learn. You can find red oak boards at most lumber yards, which means you do not have to wait for a stave to dry. An eight-foot length of clear, straight-grained red oak from the lumber yard is a perfectly legitimate starting point for your first bow.

Whatever wood you choose, grain orientation matters enormously. You want straight, long grain running parallel to the length of the bow. Any grain runout — places where the grain lines exit the side of the stave — creates weak points that can cause the bow to fail. Examine your wood carefully before you commit to working it.


Tools You Will Need

Bow carving does not require a workshop full of expensive equipment. Many experienced bowyers work with a surprisingly minimal set of tools.

A drawknife is perhaps the most essential tool in the bowyer’s kit. It allows you to remove large amounts of wood quickly, especially in the early shaping stages. A good spokeshave is invaluable for refining the limbs and getting a consistent taper. Rasps and files let you work more precisely in areas where the drawknife cannot go. Scrapers are excellent for final smoothing. A sharp knife handles detail work around the nocks and grip.

You will also want a tillering tree — a notched board or rack that holds the bow at the grip so you can see how the limbs bend when you pull the string. This is not something you buy; you make it yourself from a scrap board with notches cut at regular intervals. It is simple but indispensable.

A floor tiller, which is just using your foot to hold the bow tip while you pull the handle, can serve in place of a tillering tree in the early stages, though a proper tillering tree gives you much more control and visibility.

Finally, you need something to measure with — a tape measure and a straight edge at minimum. A flexible ruler that can follow the curve of the limb is also useful.


Laying Out the Bow

Start with a stave or board that is at least two inches wide, about an inch or slightly more thick, and around six feet long. If you are making a longbow, you want a finished length of around 64 to 72 inches depending on your draw length and personal preference. A general rule is that the bow should be at least twice your draw length when measured from the nock to the pivot point of the grip.

Mark the center of the stave. The grip will be located here, typically about six inches long, centered on the middle point, with the arrow pass slightly above the true center. This means one limb — the lower limb — will be slightly shorter than the upper limb, which is the traditional configuration for a longbow.

Lay out the limb profile on your stave. For a beginner’s longbow, you want limbs that taper gradually from about one and a half inches wide at the fade — the point where the limb meets the riser — to about half an inch at the tips. Draw this taper on the wood and cut to your lines with a bandsaw, hand saw, or drawknife. Do not go right to your lines yet; leave a little extra material on the sides for now.


Roughing Out and Early Shaping

With your profile cut, you are ready to start working the thickness. This is where the drawknife becomes your best friend. Working on the belly of the bow, begin removing wood from the limbs, working toward the tips. The goal at this stage is to establish a rough taper — thicker at the fades, thinner at the tips — while keeping the limbs symmetrical side to side.

Work evenly on both limbs, taking a little from each rather than finishing one before moving to the other. Checking frequently and working in small increments is the foundational discipline of bow making. The cardinal rule: you can always take more wood off, but you cannot put it back.

The back of the bow — the side facing away from you when you shoot — should be left as close to its original surface as possible, especially if you are working with a board. If there is a single growth ring visible on the back, follow it. Removing material from the back creates tension inconsistencies that can cause a bow to chrysal, which is the formation of stress fractures on the belly, or even to fail catastrophically.


Tillering: The Heart of Bow Making

Tillering is the process of making the limbs bend evenly and smoothly throughout their length. It is the most critical skill in bow carving, and it is where the real artistry lives.

Hang your bow on the tillering tree at the grip and pull the string down notch by notch, looking carefully at how the limbs bend. What you are looking for is an even arc along the entire length of each limb — no hinges, which are places where the limb bends too sharply in one spot, and no stiff sections where the limb barely bends at all.

When you see a hinge, you do not work on the hinge itself. Instead, you remove wood from the areas on either side, bringing the rest of the limb into flex to match. When you see a stiff area, that is where you remove wood — from the belly, in long, smooth strokes, working the full length of the stiff zone.

Go slowly. Work in small increments. Check your tiller constantly. Draw the bow on the tree to gradually increasing distances, pausing at each level to study the bend. Your goal is to reach your full draw length — typically between 26 and 30 inches for most adults — with both limbs bending in that smooth, even arc.

Getting good tiller can take many sessions of work, and it is normal to feel like you are not making progress before it suddenly clicks into place. Trust the process.


Cutting the Nocks

The nocks are the notches at the tips of the bow where the string attaches. They need to be cut carefully, because poorly placed nocks can cause string slippage or stress fractures at the tips.

On each tip, cut a nock groove on each side — on the belly and back of the limb, angling slightly toward the belly. The groove should be deep enough to hold the string securely but not so deep that it compromises the structural integrity of the tip. A round file or a specially made nock file works well for this. Round the tips slightly to reduce stress concentration.


Stringing and Finishing

Once your tiller is satisfactory and your nocks are cut, it is time to string the bow properly and check the brace height. For a longbow, a brace height of six to eight inches is typical. Too low and the arrow can hit your bow hand; too high and the bow works harder and may be uncomfortable to shoot.

With the bow strung, draw it again and take one final look at the tiller. Minor corrections are still possible at this stage, and it is worth doing them before you put finish on the wood.

For finishing, a penetrating oil finish like raw linseed oil or tung oil is traditional and effective. Apply several thin coats, allowing each to fully absorb and dry before adding the next. This seals the wood against moisture changes, which can cause a bow to warp or weaken over time.

A simple leather grip wrap over the riser area adds comfort and a finished look. Leather cord, sinew, or suede strips all work well and can be wrapped in whatever pattern you find appealing.


Making Your First String

A bow is nothing without a string. Flemish twist strings, made by twisting fibers into two or three strands and splicing them together, are the traditional choice for a self bow and are entirely within reach for a beginner.

Dacron B50 is the most forgiving synthetic string material for a wooden bow, as it has enough stretch to cushion the limbs at the shot. Linen and other natural fibers are also used and have a wonderful traditional feel, though they require more maintenance.

There are excellent video tutorials available for Flemish twist string making, and the process becomes quite intuitive after you have made your first two or three strings.


Shooting Your Bow for the First Time

The moment of first shooting a bow you made yourself is one you will not forget. Start at close range — ten to fifteen yards — with a safe backstop. Draw slowly and smoothly, feeling how the bow loads. The release should be clean and the limbs should spring forward with a satisfying, resonant quality.

Shoot lightly for the first few sessions. A new wooden bow benefits from being broken in gradually, allowing the wood to settle into its working shape. Avoid leaving the bow strung for long periods when not shooting, as this causes the limbs to take a set — to bend slightly toward the belly permanently — more quickly than they otherwise would.

After your first few shooting sessions, check the tiller again. Some minor adjustment is often beneficial as the bow settles in. A little set in the limbs is normal and not a problem; excessive set warrants investigation.


Continuing Your Journey

Your first bow will not be perfect. It may shoot a bit slower than you hoped, or the tiller may not be as even as you would like, or the grip may feel slightly awkward. This is exactly as it should be. Every bow you make teaches you something the previous one could not, and bowyers with decades of experience will still tell you their craft is evolving.
